1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Well," said Drouet at last, "we had better be going."
2. "Give me a little something, will you, mister?" he said to thelast one. "For God's sake, do; I'm starving."
3. "Oh, no," she said. "I'd rather you wouldn't. I'd rather youwouldn't be with me when I meet my sister."
4. Carrie nodded and asked her sister about the neighbourhood. Thelatter talked in a subdued tone, telling the little she knewabout it, while Hanson concerned himself with the baby. Finallyhe jumped up and handed the child to his wife.
5. "Suppose we have a little game of euchre?" suggested Hurstwood, after a light round of conversation. He was rather dexterous inavoiding everything that would suggest that he knew anything ofCarrie's past. He kept away from personalities altogether, andconfined himself to those things which did not concernindividuals at all. By his manner, he put Carrie at her ease, and by his deference and pleasantries he amused her. Hepretended to be seriously interested in all she said.
6. "No," said Drouet, "only fun. If you never play for more thanthat, you will go to Heaven."

1. "I couldn't get home last evening," she said.
2. "Supposing I do lay it on the top," he said, "and go away, they'll know who took it. I'm the last to close up. Besides, other things will happen."
3. Carrie began to think it was a little bit curious--this going toa depot--but said nothing. The whole incident was so out of thenatural that she did not attach too much weight to anything sheimagined.
4. He smiled when he saw that she took him seriously, and he thoughtwhat a chance it would afford for a possible junket of a week ortwo. He had a notion to tell her that he was joking and so brushaway her sweet seriousness, but the effect of it was toodelightful. He let it stand.
5. "Where is the conductor?" yelled one of the officers, getting hiseye on that individual, who had come nervously forward to standby Hurstwood. The latter had stood gazing upon the scene withmore astonishment than fear.
6. "Oh, let up," he answered.

1. Again he shook his head.
2. "Is it that way?" she mused.
3. The situation flashed on Carrie at once. They were unwilling tokeep her any longer, out of work. She did not blame Minnie, shedid not blame Hanson very much. Now, as she sat there digestingthe remark, she was glad she had Drouet's money."Yes," she said after a few moments, "I thought of doing that."
4. "I don't know about that," she answered.Eventually she took off the ballroom episode with considerablefeeling, forgetting, as she got deeper in the scene, all aboutDrouet, and letting herself rise to a fine state of feeling.
5. "I didn't know that," said the manager. "Felt pretty sore, Isuppose, over his defeat.""Perhaps," said the other, winking shrewdly.
6. "I wonder how the trains run?" he thought.

1. It was thus that the little theatre resounded to a babble ofsuccessful voices, the creak of fine clothes, the commonplace ofgood-nature, and all largely because of this man's bidding. Lookat him any time within the half hour before the curtain was up,he was a member of an eminent group--a rounded company of five ormore whose stout figures, large white bosoms, and shining pinsbespoke the character of their success. The gentlemen whobrought their wives called him out to shake hands. Seatsclicked, ushers bowed while he looked blandly on. He wasevidently a light among them, reflecting in his personality theambitions of those who greeted him. He was acknowledged, fawnedupon, in a way lionised. Through it all one could see thestanding of the man. It was greatness in a way, small as it was.
2. Hurstwood climbed up on the platform in the gloomy barn andwaited for a signal. He was nervous, and yet the thing was arelief. Anything was better than the barn.
3. "What is it they're going to play?"
5、 "I guess you're mistaken," she answered. Then, remembering herhusband's part in the affair, she immediately fell a prey to ahost of young suspicions, of which, however, she gave no sign.

This was the atmosphere of the Lyceum--the attitude, for thatmatter, of every managerial office in the city. These littleproprietors of businesses are lords indeed on their own ground.

It was with weak knees and a slight catch in her breathing thatshe came up to the great shoe company at Adams and Fifth Avenueand entered the elevator. When she stepped out on the fourthfloor there was no one at hand, only great aisles of boxes piledto the ceiling. She stood, very much frightened, awaiting someone.

Hurstwood, warmed and excited, gazed steadily ahead. It was anastonishing experience for him. He had read of these things, butthe reality seemed something altogether new. He was no coward inspirit. The fact that he had suffered this much now ratheroperated to arouse a stolid determination to stick it out. Hedid not recur in thought to New York or the flat. This one tripseemed a consuming thing.
