1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "You will remember, Watson," he remarked one afternoon, "thatthere is a single common point of resemblance in the varying reportswhich have reached us. This concerns the effect of the atmosphere ofthe room in each case upon those who had first entered it. You willrecollect that Mortimer Tregennis, in describing the episode of hislast visit to his brother's house, remarked that the doctor onentering the room fell into a chair? You had forgotten? Well, I cananswer for it that it was so. Now, you will remember also that Mrs.Porter, the housekeeper, told us that she herself fainted uponentering the room and had afterwards opened the window. In thesecond case- that of Mortimer Tregennis himself- you cannot haveforgotten the horrible stuffiness of the room when we arrived, though the servant had thrown open the window. That servant, I foundupon inquiry, was so ill that she had gone to her bed. You will admit,Watson, that these facts are very suggestive. In each case there isevidence of a poisonous atmosphere. In each case, also, there iscombustion going on in the room- in the one case a fire, in theother a lamp. The fire was needed, but the lamp was lit- as acomparison of the oil consumed will show- long after it was broaddaylight. Why? Surely because there is some connection between threethings- the burning, the stuffy atmosphere, and, finally, themadness or death of those unfortunate people. That is clear, is itnot?"
2. The young lady resumed her seat with an air of displeasure. Herbrother, however, had joined us and we set off all four together. Wepassed round the lawn to the outside of the young diplomatist'swindow. There were, as he had said, marks upon the bed, but theywere hopelessly blurred and vague. Holmes stooped over them for aninstant, and then rose shrugging his shoulders.
3. By eleven o'clock the next day we were well upon our way to theold English capital. Holmes had been buried in the morning papersall the way down, but after we had passed the Hampshire border hethrew them down and began to admire the scenery. It was an idealspring day, a light blue sky, flecked with little fleecy whiteclouds drifting across from west to east. The sun was shining verybrightly, and yet there was an exhilarating nip in the air, whichset an edge to a man's energy. All over the countryside, away to therolling hills around Aldershot, the little red and gray roofs of thefarm-steadings peeped out from amid the light green of the newfoliage.
4. "'Yes.'
5. "I understand that, Mr. Holmes, and it is already settled that heshall leave me forever, and go to seek his fortune in Australia.""In that case, your Grace, since you have yourself stated that anyunhappiness in your married life was caused by his presence I wouldsuggest that you make such amends as you can to the Duchess, andthat you try to resume those relations which have been so unhappilyinterrupted."
6. "And this, of course, remains to you, since the marriage is a faitaccompli?"

1. "Well, well, it was worth thinking over. Then there is anotherobvious point. The note was sent to William. The man who wrote itcould not have taken it; otherwise, of course, he might have deliveredhis own message by word of mouth. Who brought the note, then? Or didit come through the post?"
2. "Some of it, but the main part at the hotel."
3. "He has, has he? I'll do him down a thick 'un for that if I swingfor it."
4. "Whatever your reasons may be, you are perfectly correct," said she."I started from home before six reached Leatherhead at twenty past, and came in by the first train to Waterloo. Sir, I can stand thisstrain no longer; I shall go mad if it continues. I have no one toturn to-none, save only one, who cares for me, and he, poor fellow, can be of little aid. I have heard of you, Mr. Holmes; I have heard ofyou from Mrs. Farintosh, whom you helped in the hour of her sore need.It was from her that I had your address. Oh, sir, do you not thinkthat you could help me, too, and at least throw a little light throughthe dense darkness which surrounds me? At present it is out of mypower to reward you for your services, but in a month or six weeks Ishall be married, with the control of my own income, and then at leastyou shall not find me ungrateful."
5. "My God!" he cried, "what is it, Holmes? What is it?"
6. "I don't know, sir," answered the woman who had opened the door,"I only know that he drove away with the gentleman in a carriage.""Did the gentleman give a name?"

1. "Where she was afterwards found?"
2. "Lie number one," said the old man; "I never saw either of themuntil two months ago, and I have never been in Africa in my life, soyou can put that in your pipe and smoke it, Mr. Busybody Holmes!""What he says is true," said Carruthers.
4. "Well, then, I'll help you. Did anything come by post?""By post?"
5. "Oh, really! I had no idea. And which king?"
6. "Oh, yes. It is impossible to exclude them when the church is open.""This gentleman was not one of your wife's friends?"

1. "Supposing that they have held her prisoner up to now, it is clearthat they cannot let her loose without their own destruction. Wemust prepare for the worst."
2. "Then we come into difficulties. One would imagine that under suchcircumstances the first act of young Cadogan West would be to seizethe villain and raise the alarm. Why did he not do so? Could it havebeen an official superior who took the papers? That would explainWest's conduct. Or could the chief have given West the slip in thefog, and West started at once to London to head him off from his ownrooms, presuming that he knew where the rooms were? The call must havebeen very pressing, since he left his girl standing in the fog andmade no effort to communicate with her. Our scent runs cold here, and there is a vast gap between either hypothesis and the laying ofWest's body, with seven papers in his pocket, on the roof of aMetropolitan train. My instinct now is to work from the other end.If Mycroft has given us the list of addresses we may be able to pickour man and follow two tracks instead of one."
3. Lestrade stared.
4、 "They considered that it might be caused by Arthur's closing hisbedroom door."
5、 "Of course he would. The blind theory won't do. But the incidentis an admirable starting-point for an investigation. After all, abicycle is not an easy thing to conceal or to destroy. One otherquestion. Did anyone call to see the boy on the day before hedisappeared?"

"No, Watson, I am very serious. There is a test before us. If thetest comes off all will be clear. And the test will depend upon theconduct of this little weapon. One cartridge out. Now we willreplace the other five and put on the safetycatch. So! Thatincreases the weight and makes it a better reproduction."I had no glimmer of what was in his mind, nor did he enlighten me,but sat lost in thought until we pulled up in the little Hampshirestation, We secured a ramshackle trap, and in a quarter of all hourwere at the house of our confidential friend, the sergeant."A clue, Mr. Holmes? What is it?"

  • 屈人之兵 08-05

"Thank you," said Holmes, "I only wished to ask you how youwould go from here to the Strand."

  • 刘海舒 08-05

       "Yes, I can."

  • 玛丽亚-格罗芙 08-05

"I think that this case is very much in your line. We have everyhope of clearing the matter up, but we find a little difficulty ingetting anything to work upon. We have, of course, wired to theBelfast post-office, but a large number of parcels were handed in uponthat day, and they have no means of identifying this particular one,or of remembering the sender. The box is a half-pound box ofhoneydew tobacco and does not help us in any way. The medicalstudent theory still appears to me to be the most feasible, but if youshould have a few hours to spare I should be very happy to see you outhere. I shall be either at the house or in the police-station all day. What say you, Watson? Can you rise superior to the heat and run downto Croydon with me on the off chance of a case for your annals?""I was longing for something to do."

  • 吕秋平 08-04

    { "And from what?"

  • 郭炳江 08-03

      "Well, we were both worried. It was so deucedly difficult toreconstruct the affair. Look at it from the lion's point of view. Heis liberated. What does he do? He takes half a dozen bounds forward,which brings him to Ronder. Ronder turns to fly- the claw-marks wereon the back of his head- but the lion strikes him down. Then,instead of bounding on and escaping, he returns to the woman, whowas close to the cage, and he knocks her over and chews her face up.Then, again, those cries of hers would seem to imply that herhusband had in some way failed her. What could the poor devil havedone to help her? You see the difficulty?"}

"A fairly complete record, Watson! If we could only get at the manat the other end!" He sat lost in thought, tapping his fingers onthe table. Finally he sprang to his feet.

I have had a succession of strange incidents occur to me inconnection with this house, and I should much value your advice. Youwould find me at home any time to-morrow. The house is within ashort walk of the Weald Station. I believe that my late husband,Mortimer Maberley, was one of your early clients.

"Yes, sir, he wrote an answer."

{ "'Then take the treaty and lock it up there. I shall give directionsthat you may remain behind when the others go, so that you may copy itat your leisure without fear of being overlooked. When you havefinished, relock both the original and the draft in the desk, and handthem over to me personally to-morrow morning.'

"The gas was half up, as I had left it, and my unhappy boy, dressed only in his shirt and trousers, was standing beside the light, holding the coronet in his hands. He appeared to be wrenching at it,or bending it with all his strength. At my cry he dropped it fromhis grasp and turned as pale as death. I snatched it up and examinedit. One of the gold corners, with three of the beryls in it, wasmissing.
