1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 After a while, Hurstwood said:
2. "Oh, because," she said, "I wouldn't want to."
3. "You must marry me, though," she said."I'll get a license to-day," he answered.
4. These little expeditions took up her time until quite fouro'clock, when she was weary enough to go home. She felt as ifshe ought to continue and inquire elsewhere, but the results sofar were too dispiriting. She took the car and arrived at OgdenPlace in three-quarters of an hour, but decided to ride on to theWest Side branch of the Post-office, where she was accustomed toreceive Hurstwood's letters. There was one there now, writtenSaturday, which she tore open and read with mingled feelings. There was so much warmth in it and such tense complaint at herhaving failed to meet him, and her subsequent silence, that sherather pitied the man. That he loved her was evident enough. That he had wished and dared to do so, married as he was, was theevil. She felt as if the thing deserved an answer, andconsequently decided that she would write and let him know thatshe knew of his married state and was justly incensed at hisdeception. She would tell him that it was all over between them.
5. Accordingly, Mrs. Hurstwood decided to broach the subject. Shewas thinking this over when she came down to the table, but forsome reason the atmosphere was wrong. She was not sure, after itwas all over, just how the trouble had begun. She was determinednow, however, that her husband was a brute, and that, under nocircumstances, would she let this go by unsettled. She wouldhave more lady-like treatment or she would know why.
6. Hurstwood breathed heavily in excitement and jumped down with thenervous conductor as if he had been called.

1. "No," returned Jessica, "they're poor as church mice."
2. "Yes, you did," she said.
3. "He is, I guess. Jack told me they were shipping Vegacura toAustralia now--said they sent a whole box to Cape Town lastweek."
4. The barkeeper was setting out the glasses and bottle before them, and they now poured out the draught as they talked, Drouetfilling his to within a third of full, as was considered proper, and Hurstwood taking the barest suggestion of whiskey andmodifying it with seltzer.
5. "All right. Now I have fifteen. Step out of the line," andseizing one by the shoulder, the captain marched him off a littleway and stood him up alone.
6. "What's the use worrying? I'm not out yet. I've got six weeksmore. Even if worst comes to worst, I've got enough to live onfor six months."

1. To Carrie he said nothing whatsoever. She could feel that herrequest disturbed him. To pay her would soon become adistressing thing.
2. With it once out and before him, it seemed a foolish thing tothink about leaving it. Certainly it would. Why, he could livequietly with Carrie for years.
3. "That's right," said Shaughnessy.
4. In the front room Hanson was reading his paper. As usual, shehelped Minnie clear away the dishes and straighten up. Then shesaid:
5. "Say," he said, suddenly; "where is Hurstwood now?"
6. He dropped the note and looked quietly round. Now he knew whathe missed. It was the little ornamental clock, which was hers.It had gone from the mantelpiece. He went into the front room, his bedroom, the parlour, lighting the gas as he went. From thechiffonier had gone the knick-knacks of silver and plate. Fromthe table-top, the lace coverings. He opened the wardrobe--noclothes of hers. He opened the drawers--nothing of hers. Hertrunk was gone from its accustomed place. Back in his own roomhung his old clothes, just as he had left them. Nothing else wasgone.

1. She looked at him quizzically, but melted with sympathy as thevalue of the look upon his face forced itself upon her. It waslove now, keen and strong--love enhanced by difficulty and worry. She could not help smiling.
2. There was no more to be done upon that score that night. He wenton brooding over his situation until midnight, when he repairedagain to the Palmer House. He wondered what the morning wouldbring forth, and slept anything but soundly upon it.Next day he went again to the office and opened his mail, suspicious and hopeful of its contents. No word from Carrie.Nothing from his wife, which was pleasant.
3. "He seems to be," said Carrie.
4、 "Oh, I need one," said Carrie.
5、 The man wrote an order on a small card. "Take that to ourbarns," he said, "and give it to the foreman. He'll show youwhat to do."

The play was one of those drawing-room concoctions in whichcharmingly overdressed ladies and gentlemen suffer the pangs oflove and jealousy amid gilded surroundings. Such bon-mots areever enticing to those who have all their days longed for suchmaterial surroundings and have never had them gratified. Theyhave the charm of showing suffering under ideal conditions. Whowould not grieve upon a gilded chair? Who would not suffer amidperfumed tapestries, cushioned furniture, and liveried servants?Grief under such circumstances becomes an enticing thing. Carrielonged to be of it. She wanted to take her sufferings, whateverthey were, in such a world, or failing that, at least to simulatethem under such charming conditions upon the stage. So affectedwas her mind by what she had seen, that the play now seemed anextraordinarily beautiful thing. She was soon lost in the worldit represented, and wished that she might never return. Betweenthe acts she studied the galaxy of matinee attendants in frontrows and boxes, and conceived a new idea of the possibilities ofNew York. She was sure she had not seen it all--that the citywas one whirl of pleasure and delight.

{ While this was still in his mind, the incident with Oeslogge andCarrie occurred. There had been a good deal to irritate him, butthis seemed much the worst. Never before had she accused him ofstealing--or very near that. She doubted the naturalness of solarge a bill. And he had worked so hard to make expenses seemlight. He had been "doing" butcher and baker in order not tocall on her. He had eaten very little--almost nothing.

She used her feet less heavily, a thing that was brought about byher attempting to imitate the treasurer's daughter's gracefulcarriage. How much influence the presence of that young woman inthe same house had upon her it would be difficult to say. But,because of all these things, when Hurstwood called he had found ayoung woman who was much more than the Carrie to whom Drouet hadfirst spoken. The primary defects of dress and manner hadpassed. She was pretty, graceful, rich in the timidity born ofuncertainty, and with a something childlike in her large eyeswhich captured the fancy of this starched and conventional poseramong men. It was the ancient attraction of the fresh for thestale. If there was a touch of appreciation left in him for thebloom and unsophistication which is the charm of youth, itrekindled now. He looked into her pretty face and felt thesubtle waves of young life radiating therefrom. In that largeclear eye he could see nothing that his blase nature couldunderstand as guile. The little vanity, if he could haveperceived it there, would have touched him as a pleasant thing.

There came a time when he said nothing at all. Money was handedhim, and for each twelve cents he singled out a man and put himin the other line. Then he walked up and down as before, lookingat the ground.

{ As a matter of fact, she was in a most hopeless quandary. Herewas a man whom she thoroughly liked, who exercised an influenceover her, sufficient almost to delude her into the belief thatshe was possessed of a lively passion for him. She was still thevictim of his keen eyes, his suave manners, his fine clothes. She looked and saw before her a man who was most gracious andsympathetic, who leaned toward her with a feeling that was adelight to observe. She could not resist the glow of histemperament, the light of his eye. She could hardly keep fromfeeling what he felt.

Carrie was now lightened by a touch of this divine afflatus. Shedrew to herself commendation from her two admirers which she hadnot earned. Their affection for her naturally heightened theirperception of what she was trying to do and their approval ofwhat she did. Her inexperience conserved her own exuberantfancy, which ran riot with every straw of opportunity, making ofit a golden divining rod whereby the treasure of life was to bediscovered.
